I mention near the end of this podcast, "like 76." Though cut for time I was referring to a discussion in the podcast we had about 1976 in film and its Oscars. A blood-drenched horror film nabs a best actress nomination? Check. A story of society's losers who taste success and lose once more? Check. A story of a horrible president's rise? Check. There's a lot that's similar between this year (Anora, The Substance, The Apprentice) and 1976 (Carrie, Rocky, All the President's Men) but much that is different. There is no This Year's Taxi Driver—which Hollywood believed to be the end of civilization. But still, I can't help but feel this is pointing a little bit to a new-New Hollywood era. Maybe?
